NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONS WIN CANADIAN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP This highly competitive atmosphere also took root at the ladies level. Tight games and a highly competitive atmosphere showed throughout the event. Again the ball hockey connoisseur would have a plethora of great games to watch. The odds on favorite the BC Hawks had returned to retain their crown. However, new young teams that want to lay claim to the golden cup quickly established themselves early. And a real competitive tourney ensued. In the end it was another highly skilled, and youthful group from Quebec that vanquished all in golden victory. The Coyotes of Joliette faced the CBHA powerhouse from BC. The Hawks led by Team Canada members Ho-Talaro, and Linda Milani, along with proven vets like Coleen Thompson were ready to defend their crown. The youthful Coyotes led by a highlight reel goal from tournament MVP Caroline Berube in the final proved to fast and skilled for the Hawks. The Coyotes had an assortment of dangerous players that tested the mettle of any team. Great forwards like Janie-Claude Arpin and their great leader Jennifer Provost combined with the pure goal scoring genius of Berube to finally break down the Hawks. And even though the Hawks out shot them 26-21 in the final. Teams had to deal with the lightning quick goaltending of little Joanie Vermette. Who was up to the task. Pitching a shutout in the final. In the end the Hawks could not hold on to this juggernaut and succumbed to a 4-0 score. As the Joliette Coyotes, led by the two goals scored by Berube, with singles going to Virginie Gelinas and team leader Provost, became the first Quebec ladies team to win the National title.
